DRIVING DIRECTIONS FOR SAUK Go east on Highway 20 from Sedro-Woolley. At milepost 96 turn north (left) on Forest Road 1030 along the western boundary of Rockport State Park. Forest Road 1030 switchbacks a low-gear 7 miles to a junction (right) with short Spur Road 1036. Turn right to turnaround parking with the grand overlook in a few hundred yards at the end of the spur.
HIKE DESCRIPTION FOR SAUK The trail makes a steady switchback climb across steep meadows to the ridgetop and lookout site. The meadows are full of many varieties of wildflowers during the season. At the ridge, a spur path branches right and drops down to Sauk lake. Beyond this point is a lunch spot by a large tree. Beyond this lunch spot the path continues across steep meadows to the site of the old lookout. Peaks to be seen from the ridge are Glacier Peak, Mounts Baker, Shuksan, Whitehorse, White Chuck, and Pugh; on clear days, Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, and the San Juan Islands can be seen. 4.2 miles with 1200 ft of elevation gain.
WARNINGS The road to the trailhead has some large potholes and is best driven in low gear, especially on the descent to avoid using brakes. On the trail, do not shortcut switchbacks or dislodge rocks. Those who do are endangering the lives of those on the trail below them. Be extra careful if you encounter snow. For up-to-date road, trail, and weather information, visit Sauk Mountain — Washington Trails Association.
RETURN TIME 2:00 pm. Wait for all to return safely before leaving.
No pass required. Dogs allowed on leash. Outhouse at trailhead.
