Barnaby Slough Field Trip

Barnaby Slough Field Trip Saturday, June 20, 2026, 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM

Trip Leader: John Day (johnd@skagitaudubon.org, 360-854-8415)

Pre-registration required: see information below

Meet at 7:00 AM in front of National Park Service/Forest Service office building, 810 State Rte 20, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284. If no parking spaces are available in front of the building, park in the southeast corner of the North Cascades Christian Fellowship Church lot to the west off SR 20, just across Ball Street from Timber Espresso (open at 6:00 AM). We’ll carpool around 35 miles to Barnaby Slough, southeast of Rockport.

Barnaby Slough is an old oxbow of the Skagit River that was developed as a fish hatchery in the 1950s and then restored to more natural conditions a few years ago. It’s a great place to see wetland and water birds such as ducks, Pied-billed Grebes, Osprey, Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfishers, and Spotted Sandpipers, as well as numerous songbirds, including warblers, sparrows, flycatchers, vireos, tanagers, orioles, and thrushes. Bring water, snacks, binoculars and a scope if you have them, and be prepared for whatever weather is in the forecast. Plan on walking around three miles on roads closed to vehicular traffic. This is NOT a handicapped-accessible field trip.
