Field Trip - August 27, 2022

Shorebird migration is in full swing by late August and perhaps the best place to see them in Skagit County is at Hayton Reserve on Fir Island. An incoming tide forces the birds foraging on tideflats in Skagit Bay to seek shallower water in the tide basin at Hayton, which begins to fill up when the water level at the Swinomish Channel tide station rises above five feet. 

Join trip leader Neil O'Hara on Saturday, August 27, starting at 3:30 p.m.; over the next two hours the basin will fill up and most shorebirds will leave by about 5:30 p.m.

Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one--birds at Hayton can be quite distant--and let's see what species we can find together.

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED.
