Field Trip to Weaverling Spit: December 8

Von and Betty Kuehn were leaders for a Saturday morning field trip on Weaverling Spit in Anacortes on December 8th. Fifteen people attended, including 2 who were visiting at the RV Park. We were lucky with the weather, after a week of cold. Temps were about 40 degrees and the stiff wind died down to give us a pleasant winter day. We had a total count of at least 35 species. Our favorite was a group of 6 Long-tailed Ducks which hung around for a long time in easy scope distance. Also spotted were several White-winged Scoters and there was a fleeting look at one Western Grebe. There were lots of other water birds, which included buffleheads, horned grebes, and loons, and a good variety of small birds in the vegetated areas. All in all it was a very pleasant, productive day.
